Welcome to Solstice With Egg 2012. This is year 18, I think. As usual, it's a mix of electronic and acoustic material. Once again I'm not burning CDs, by and large, but I'll be happy to do so on request.
Word of mouth is still my single biggest way of finding new music. I feel like really good music recommendation is solvable but unsolved. Pandora does OK, I guess, but the stations all get repetitive after a while. Anyone know a better solution? I'm kinda sorta toying with the idea of doing a startup to do better music recommendation. At least two of the tracks here were discovered by browsing around Bandcamp's experimental section, which I highly recommend. I spent a lot of time this year diving into South American music, especially the amazing world of Afro-Peruvian music. If you like tracks two and three, you should go learn more about it. I've also been reconnecting to 90's microhouse (like the stuff on Perlon), but I didn't want to include it on a 2012 mix (although there's some interesting recent stuff in the same vein like Stimming).
You can learn more about what I've been listening to at last.fm.
If you like my taste in music, you might like my new music project, Tin Pan Algorithm.
You can find previous years' mixes here.
You can stream the mix or stream individual tracks (below). You can also download it as a single track or individual tracks. To download, right-click the links and choose 'save as' or 'download as'; double-click the resulting zip file and you'll get all the mp3s and the artwork and whatnot. Select them and drag them to your media player of choice.
Enjoy!
